But this product made such short work of three long-needed repairs/bulb replacements that I immediately ran to my computer after fixing my light sockets that had been useless for literally months! I replaced a canister light over my sink, one in my hallway, and one in a little cheap lamp where the bulbs had corroded into the sockets. The glass bulbs were out but the metal attachment was stuck inside. It took about 30 seconds to a minute a piece to fix. I did not use the shield because it would not fit into the canisters or lamp shade. Corroded bits of bulb do fall out so be careful and wear your glasses. Or, just don't stand under the socket! You need to use some force and it sometimes feels as though the tool is too big to fit in the socket or that it is not secure. It also feels like maybe it was a bit flimsy. But every time I pulled it out and peeked at the socket, the metal part of the bulb was farther out...and a few more turns did the trick. It was never in danger of breaking. There was no damage to the socket and the replacement bulbs worked fine! I did take care to turn off the electricity to each of the lights before using this product (I just unplugged the lamp). Anyway, I can't believe I waited so long to fix my lights. I had heard about the potato trick but really did not want to stick a potato up in my sockets and risk damaging them by leaving potato bits behind. I am glad I searched the internet and found this item! I really, really wish I had another one to give in our grab bag/gift- exchange tonight. If it screws into a standard socket the tool will work. If you have some odd bulb that is not a standard base it may not work as it has limit on how wide it will spread.
