This book is an admirable attempt at creating an illustrated history depicting every type of submarine operated by the United States Navy which is accessible to entry-level readers. It's divided into five chapters, each covering a period in submarine history (early years, World War II, Cold War diesels, Cold War nukes, and post-Cold War). Each chapter is divided into a text introduction that briefly describes each type of submarine built during that period along with some important developments, with the rest of each chapter devoted to photographs and the occasional piece of period artwork.Being one of those strange pedants who insist on reading every last word in a book, this book probably isn't my flavor. With some tighter editing, I could have easily given this four stars. Unfortunately, the writing style is dry and repetitive, with information sometimes repeated twice in the same paragraph, except for some interior views I haven't seen elsewhere the photographs aren't terribly rare, and the fact-checking leaves something to be desired. We're told that 24 men were killed in the Bonefish fire, that the Skipjacks were the first USN SSNs with pumpjet propulsors, that the Ohios displaced 21,000 tons submerged and had 16 missile tubes, the Narwhal was the only American submarine with a natural circulation reactor, and the inability of the S-class to reach 20 knots surfaced constituted a design failure.If you just want some nice photographs of American submarines, this isn't a bad book, but I can't imagine paying full price for what's essentially a flawed introductory book. Is it wrong to criticize a $2 picture book? Perhaps. Still, I've been studying this subject for more than two decades now, and I've probably developed impossibly high standards as a result. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Nice read *by H***5 on Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on November 29, 2021* I am a Submarine sailor and I found it very accurate and an easy read for people who want to learn about submarines. ### ⭐⭐⭐ Ok book for mainly WWII subs *by D***R on Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on July 28, 2021* A lot of good photos of submarine “sails” or towers, but not a lot of detail drawings of what the interiors are like of different era subs. And very little on the latest subs.
