We used two one in each corner. I put it together with no issues other than I hate an allen wrench so I used my ratchet screwdriver with allen wrench attachment. They have held up very well i even have candles on the top and it hasn't bothered the finish. Be aware if you try to push the bottom piece to lock into the top with bare hands, then you should have "very strong" hands.
