So here is What I have learned by trial and error. It can be lit with a match or gas lighter. First load the bowl with wood chips then turn it on. Light the chips. The fan draws in the flame so the Wood starts to glow very quickly. Run the fan until the chips are exhausted. After use it needs cleaning as everything gets a good coating of tar. The stainless steel mesh that sits in the bowl gets blocked after a few uses and stops the flow of smoke. They can be replaced which is a lot easier than trying to clean them!
