Review: Iconic Italian Coffee Maker for Beginners and Pros - Perfect brew capacity for 2 people or 1 person who likes two strong lattes throughout the day (me). Easy to use, timeless Italian design and quality. This is one of those products you know will last you a lifetime, it's just up to you to use it. The coffee quality out of this maker is FANTASTIC. Almost espresso like, but certainly a higher water to coffee ratio. Perfect straight, with a little sugar, and most milk based coffee drinks. For true beginners, the coffee quality may take a little time to dial in unless you've done some research (~30g of beans). I use mine on a gas stove, which is ideal for quickly adjusting temperatures during brewing. But an electric stove will also work. From start to pour, it takes 20 minutes at most, if starting with cold water, to make coffee with this 6 cup Moka. Perfect for those seeking a slower coffee ritual with excellent coffee quality, durability, simplicity, and sustainability. Side Note: Please don't be one of those people who only clean their Moka pot with water. Coffee oils and grime do accumulate in the top collection cup and middle filter cup. I clean mine once a week with dish soap and a soft sponge (Only with everyday use). I also ensure to remove the rubber gasket on the bottom of the collection cup and clean there too. Finally after each use and rinse, I make sure to immediately dry all components of the pot. Following this routine will prevent rancid oil from building up and overall dirty looking pot.
Review: What can I say that millions of Italians have already said? It's the BEST - Where do I start? This is simply the best product in it's category, bar none. Moka pots in general get a bad rap as being finicky and difficult to use, but that's nonsense. Watch a few You Tube videos and see for yourself, there's nothing to it, a very short learning curve. Basically all you have to do is: 1. Boil water and pour into the base, fill to just below the valve button 2. Fill the filter with medium/fine ground coffee (Illy is too fine, IMO) and tap to level, do not tamp down 3. Place a 2.5" round Aeropress filter on top of grounds (500 for $6, just a bit more than a penny each) 4. Add a few drops of water on top of the filter so it stays in place while you screw down the lid 5. Place on medium heat, with the lid open so you can see when the "volcano erupts" 6. When it starts to sputter, take it off the heat and close the lid, wait a few minutes and pour. I have an induction cooktop and the base is aluminum so I got a Bialetti Induction Stainless steel plate All Moka pots work the same way, but be aware of cup capacity. When they are labeled "3 cup" or "6 cup" do not think of it like 8 oz cups, or even the standard 5 oz standard coffee cup measurement. They are more like 1.25 oz espresso cups, so the 3 cup model only makes 4 ounces of coffee, not even enough for one person. I returned it and bought the 6 cup model, which makes about 7.5 ounces of coffee, and it is strong enough to add a bit of water to at the end, without losing its potency. Finally, the color design. 90% of Moka pots are all aluminum, some of the trendy new ones are black, or white or have various pastel shades to match kitchen decor. This is Red and Green like the Italian Flag, (with a high polished stainless steel band between the two colors), in fact it is called the "Italia" model to differentiate it from the other ones. It is just gorgeous. Very well enameled, and cleans up beautifully with a magic eraser (don't use soap on the inside) . I bought this thinking it would just be an adjunct to my espresso maker, drip coffeemaker, Chemex pourover coffee maker (actually an excellent Agogo knockoff), and my Bodum French Press. I have had this almost a month, and have used it every day. It's that good. I first discovered this by watching a video on You Tube of Jerry Seinfeld talking to GQ about certain objects that have "quintessence", meaning that they are the finest example of their genre, and he RAVED about his Bialetti Italia Moka pot (along with things like the Bic crystal pen and Levi 501s). I was intrigued, and for $68 (Moka pot PLUS the heating plate) it just can't be beat, it's PERFECT!

## Questions & Answers

**Q: Does it make espresso in the same way as starbucks in terms of taste?**
A: 2015 update - if you use Starbuck beans, you can more closely recreate the taste of Starbuck's.A conditional yes, please let me explain why. I should also mention that for years I was a Starbuck's two doppio's a day fanatic. I did find, using Starbuck's beans bought in the smallest quantities for freshness gave me great results in the moka pot. How close you find your satisfaction with the moka pot is really unknown until you work with one and evaluate the results for yourself. That being said, I will share two years of experimentation with the Moka pot, in some details, hopefully without overwhelming you. Keep in mind, if you simply want to put coffee and water in the machine, there is no need to read further. The moka pot is pretty consistent in making a good strong coffee. There are some other variables you can work with, depending on your interest, and motivation. I love espresso and am highly motivated to capturing that elusive finest cup. There are some constants:1. Since the water is a constant (you fill GOOD water to the bottom of the valve), and 2. You fill the basket with ground coffee (and do NOT tamp it down) 3. You heat the pot on very low heat and remove it when the water sound stops and no not let the pot boil. Then there is only one other variable, the grind of the coffee.1. There is only so much ground coffee the basket can hold, so the taste of the coffee will change depending on how fine or coarse the beans are ground. 2. If you are using pre-ground Starbuck's coffee, that would seem like you have it made right? Well, no. Keep in mind Starbuck's uses a big machine and this is a little pot for your home. What I and others have found, is grinding your own fresh beans will maximize the likelihood you are getting the best results. I have moved over to the dark side and got a burr grinder as a gift. Having worked with it for two years, I can attest to the fact I can work with a fine or coarse grind to get great and strong coffee from the Moka pot. Just remember to remove the pot from the heat when you hear the water stops. Leaving it on longer will not make the coffee stronger, it will boil it and most likely make in unpalatable. My preference is for the aluminum pot vs stainless steel and I do NOT wash the pot with any soap. A wipe down with a moist paper towel and leaving it air dry has given me great results after the initial one or two first pots I needed to break in the pot in.Whew on the details here but I am trying to give you an honest explanation of what you can do to get more consistent results for yourself. Hope this helps.

**Q: Does '3 cup' refer to 3 standard size espresso cups or 24 fluid ounces?**
A: It means 3 espresso shots. The upper chamber of the pot, which holds the coffee, has a capacity of 3/4 of a measuring cup, or 6 ounces.

**Q: I have had my moka pot for months now. It shows signs of rust on the inside. Is this still ok to use?**
A: Sounds like you never dried it after washing it. Please, never leave on old coffee oils in your moka pot. ALWAYS wash it. Don't listen to those people that tell you you want old coffee oils in the aluminum. It'll just taste rancid, and after each brewing, it'll taste burnt. Every day espresso machines are cleaned, everyday pots and pans that use aluminum are cleaned, so clean your moka pot.

Use just water in the boiler chamber and boil it on the stove to do a deep cleaning. You can also use two teaspoons of vinegar to the water. Cool it down and DRY it with a towel or rag. Leave it disassembled and let it air dry.

**Q: is this made of stainless steel**
A: Its made of aluminum.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Excellent espresso maker
*by R***O on May 17, 2026*

We’ve had this stovetop espresso maker for about 5 years, and the coffee quality has always been excellent. It makes rich, flavorful espresso and worked very well for daily use. The only downside is that the metal piece holding the handle is not very durable. After 5 years, it broke, and unfortunately we couldn’t find a replacement part. Other than that, we were very happy with it overall.
