The Strathmore 500 Series 2-Ply Bristol Vellum Pad is the ideal pad for experienced artists. With a 2-ply surface that readily takes pencil, charcoal, sketching sticks, airbrush, ink, marker, and pen; this pad provides the perfect texture for realistic blending and shading. The Strathmore 500 Series 2-Ply Bristol Vellum Pad is great for comic, cartoon, and graphic novel creation and allows for concepts and designs to flourish but is not recommended for traditional watercolor techniques. Review: Interesting paper stock for comic creation - The pros: Easy to draw on, inks well. Great weight and durability for inked line art if you work at a decent pace. Finished originals look great. The cons: Very toothy surface *not smooth at all*, can have some ink bleedage if you work slowly. Especially when filling black areas with brush *compared to other professional grade comic book boards*. This particular board does not work well with color markers. Also had some odd issues scanning in pages, lot of texture from the paper scans in when zoomed in, but easily correctable if you understand and use level adjustments in Photoshop. I use a 4H lead holder for pencil rough work and this paper is pretty difficult to erase after finish inking, however I am a bit heavy handed.
Review: Best drawing paper I've used - The thickness of the bristol is perfect for final pieces, especially for my commission projects. The Vellum surface has great tooth for holding down layers amof graphite and charcoal. This allows great blending and gradients. The 500 series is archival and made to withstand the test of time. This paper is great for erasing and reworking areas.

**Q: Compared to Stonehenge how toothy is the bristol vellum?**
A: Thanks for reaching out to us!  We reached out to one of our art educators about your question and this is what she came back with: "I would describe the 500 Bristol Vellum as having a more prominent texture than Stonehenge.  The 500 Bristol Vellum's texture is also very regular- it has more of an even, distinct pattern. The Stonehenge paper doesn't have a regular pattern, the texture is more like the texture on Strathmore's 500 Mixed Media.  Also, Stonehenge has a softer surface than the 500 Bristol Vellum, so the texture flattens out a bit more when you shade on it vs. the 500 Bristol Vellum which has a firmer surface and therefore holds its texture more during shading (which makes the texture more prominent when you draw/shade on it.)

**Q: Is this cold press Bristol?**
A: This is a Plate surface Bristol so it would be more like a hot press than a cold.

**Q: Good for pencil ?**
A: Thanks for writing to us, our 500 Series Bristol Plate works well with graphite pencil, pen & ink, marker, mixed media and collage

**Q: What paper do you recommend for fine detail like Zentangles using micron pens. It also needs to be heavyweight for making tiles.**
A: I use my Strathmore 500 primarily for colored pencil but did find the Micron lay down was smooth with no skips. I would want a heavier wait for tiles.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Best quality paper for colored pencil work or other dry materials...but...

I do drawings in colored pencil and want the highest quality paper. Strathmore's 500 series is the best. I have purchased this vellum bristol pad a few times; however, lately, I find the pads arrive slightly damaged. The corners are crushed, and the pad is slightly bent, warped, as if it's been stored too tightly perhaps in a damp area. I won't return this as I can trim the edges and flatten the paper with a heavy weight, but I think it's best to bite the bullet (shipping costs) and order from a reputable art supply outfit online.
