As I have mine set up now, the mast is 3.5 feet. I could shrink or expand it however. **Q: Once the canvas is rotated, can you lock the position of the attachment into place so that the canvas does not move while painting?** A: I love this easel. To my knowledge, there is no way to lock the rotation. I have never had a problem with this. The rotation position has never drifted while I was painting. This easel is heavy duty and very well built. **Q: How do i know if if this item will attach to my easel ? what makers does it attach to without too much aggravation, as i would have to enlist help...** A: It gives you the ability to tighten and loosen on to the easel mast, I have one and it fits on all my standard easels. This was the easiest part to set up, I just loosened the wing nuts slide it on to the easel shaft then tighten down the wingnuts at a place that would allow my painting full rotation without hitting the ceiling or easel tray. Once tighten down it stays in place, there is also an added brace or brake that is place below and tighten down once you have it where you want it. I have an l shaped desk and it was getting in the way of rotation so I cut off the ends a bit. Then fashioned an even shorter one with square dowels. I did find that the clamps were difficult to work with so I used c clamps instead. I attached it it an h frame desktop easel and put blocks on the end to counter balance it.
