One brand is as safe as another. I tested this and it does work as a fire starter. Be aware that unless you use a good rod and scraper to get good sparks it won't catch very easy. You should also practice if you've never really done this before. Magnesium can be tricky. The kit came with the ferro rod/striker and all nicely packaged. I used the magnesium a few times right away - we did some fires in the woods with wet wood that we found on the ground, and ignited the Mg with a ferro rod / striker. It lit right up every time and the fire got started right up. Each box has 6 little ziploc bags of Mg in it, and we used probably 1/4 of a bag each time and that was plenty. Overall this product worked great, and would highly recommend.
