## Description

Product description Create your own garden anywhere! GARDZEN COMMUNITY CORNER Heirloom or Hybrid Seeds, Which is Better? The answer is ‘depends’: if you want to save seeds and plant them year after year, heirlooms are best. Hybrids can give you plants with the traits you want, but saving seeds is much more unreliable. Heirlooms are wonderful in that they connect us to history and let us explore what previous generations of farmers and gardeners did, while hybrids are exciting and offer something new nearly every year. Which you prefer is up to you—it’s your garden and you get to grow it how you like! Gravel in Plant Containers: Myth and Reality We were taught to put gravel in the bottom of containers to help soil drain, but it doesn't work very well. Adding gravel can potentially make things more difficult. As our fellow gardening educators at Parker County Master Gardener Association demonstrate in this beautiful illustration, adding a layer of gravel can keep water trapped in the soil near the roots of the plants, which causes the roots waterlogged and then root rot. So it's best to avoid using gravel inside of flower pots. How to Add Compost in Your Container Plants? Following the formula you would for adding it to soil—2 inches or 5cm at planting time—gently use your fingers to top dress the compost by stirring it into the the soil in the container. Be careful and avoid disturbing the roots of existing plants, as this can damage them. An Important Tip Giving Right Nutrition to Tomatoes Tomatoes need more calcium than some plants. Calcium helps prevent blossom-end rot, which as the name implies causes the end of the fruit with the flower on it to decay. When planting your tomatoes either in ground or in a container, some additional calcium in the form of a crushed-up eggshell is a good idea. It’ll help get your plants off to a good start and along with a good fertilizer keep them thriving all season long. How Long Those Grow Bags Can Last? Gardzen grow bags can last at least two years. Review: All of My Roses Live in These - I grow about 125 Miniature and Miniflora roses in these pots, with more plants always on the way. I didn't buy this house with a rose garden in mind, so I lack sunny areas. Growing my roses in these pots makes it easy to move them around so that I can rotate them in and out of the sunny patches. Or if a plant gets a fungus or pest problem, I can move it into a quarantine spot. I live in South Carolina, so some of the Mini roses get to be about 5-6 feet tall! The seven gallon size grow bag is good for most of the roses, a few of the more monstrous varieties get transferred into a larger version of these fabric pots. Even so, I can only think of one time that a rose blew over in a windstorm. The weight of the moist soil is a good counterbalance to the foliage. Seven gallons is probably too small for the larger rose types, but my own root Miniatures and Minifloras do fine. Some of my plants are grafted on Fortuniana, and they do eventually require larger pots. The good: These pots provide excellent drainage. I plant exclusively with Promix BX. The pots do not dry out more quickly than regular rigid pots. They are really easy to move around by grabbing the handles and lifting or dragging the pots. Summer sun and winter chill have not affected the color or strength of the material. All of the seams are well sewn. Nothing I use in the garden stains or bleaches the fabric. Also, the price is great! When I give away rose plants, I don't feel too bad about giving away the grow bag along with it, because they are so affordable. The bad: Transplanting is not the easiest when planted with roses. With a regular pot, you can let the rose dry out slightly, run a knife around the edges of the pot on the inside, tip it over, give it a few taps, and slide the rose out in one piece complete with roots and soil. With these, the sides are floppy, so that doesn't work. I wait until (our mild) winter when the roses are dormant, roll the rose canes up in landscape fabric to protect myself from thorns, place the pot on its side on a tarp, and dig around with a hand trowel until I can get the rose out. Then I replace in a larger pot and add back in the spilled soil from the tarp. The Ugly: Let's face it, these are not particularly decorative. They don't really add to the landscape. But I have several dozen of these along the sides and front of my house, and it's not horrible. The rest are in my privacy fenced back yard, and they are just fine. Bottom line, I buy this brand along with a couple of other similar products. One of the brands I purchase is much more expensive, but these bags are just as good in quality.
Review: Great Buy! - These pots are great. Used them outdoors and they look great. They don't seem to be cheaply made and have a little thickness to them. Doesn't come with handles but these are only 1 gal pots, so they're not going to be too heavy anyways. My plants grow well in these pots and i'm sure you wont have any issues using these.
