Meh - ends in a cliffhanger and I'm done with being sucked into that game

*by K***R on Reviewed in the United States on June 30, 2018*

I was stuck between a 2 and 3 star review for this, not because it was written that badly but because it was too many details and narrative wrapped around a suspicious plot that doesn't seem to get to where its going at all. Of course, when I discovered it ends in a cliffhanger, that pretty much did it for me. I have put notes like the following in every review I've written about cliffhangers lately - Authors, I don't care if you write cliffhangers, I don't care if you want to milk a series for all its worth in terms of money. What I DO care about is that you tell me in big letters up front that this book will end and I will have to read Books 2,3,4, and 5 before I get closure. That gives me the option of NOT reading at all. I saw the review that Redbook published and wrote about it being the second book to read behind Fifty. Well, first off, Fifty was about a sadist, spoiled brat who had no true knowledge of the BDSM lifestyle, just his own kinks and a very immature heroine who needed a good paddling and not in any enticing way. So, I picked up the book figuring how could there be two books like this on the planet, right? This book jumps back and forth, up and down, it gives irrelevant details as part of the story, as if those details mean anything at all to the plot. I really, really, really wanted to like Alex. I want strong women who want romance along with their erotic action. But nope, didn't get it here. And I really wanted to like Nox, but in the end, he got what he wanted and I think I have to continue to book 2 to find out what really happens. Unfortunately (or maybe fortunately), I'm not going to do that.My advice to the author is to write a series that are stand-alones. I know you can do it, its really easy. You don't have to have total closure at each book, but at least let the reader stop reading at the end with a good feeling, instead of feeling like a pickpocket is after their wallets. I've spent as much as $50 for a book for my Kindle, so please don't think this is an issue of money. It IS an issue of truthfullness and writing talent. I would read another book by Ms. Romig, but it will not be part of this series.

Story jumps back & forth in time multiple times, then ends on a cliff-hanger. Annoying!

No spoiler with review: Betrayal is of little depth and jumps back and forth between a young woman's wild vacation week (when she meets alpha male "Nox"), and the same young woman in her good girl role at home with her controlling step father and intolerable family pressures. The opening seems somewhat childish, and the back and forth writing style causes repeated and annoying story disruptions. In Betrayal, Ms. Romig refers to past events (the wild week) in italics, but writes as though those events are presently occurring, thus enabling her to avoid writing in past tense. For her this seems to be a necessity, due to poor grammar skills, particularly relating to tenses. Betrayal eventually morphs into Alexandria's escape into a better situation, the result of which seems to be the beginning of the actual meat of the story. There is a cliff-hanger non-ending. I refuse to pay for cliff-hanger stories. Why would anyone pay full price for part of a book? I own over 600 books and have read many hundreds more of hardbacks and paperback novels, none of which required additional purchases to obtain the story's end. Previously I'd purchased two of Ms. Romig's first books in a series because the stories were good. I didn't purchase the subsequent books of that series because the hundreds of grammatical errors became so intolerable that I could not take anymore. However, this author has the ability to create a good story and to hold the interest of her readers. She should be able to sell her works without resorting to cliff-hanger endings that hold the end of the story hostage until the reader has purchased who knows how many books. Personally, I own 20 books by an author (other than Ms. Romig) because I like that particular author. Additionally, I own multiple books by many other preferred authors. If an author's books are good they will be purchased. Dividing a story into segments and then pricing them as individual books is neither fair nor cost effective for the reader, and might start pushing customers, such as myself, back into reading paperbacks exclusively. Please authors and Amazon, make it very clear to the reader when a book stops with a cliff-hanger rather than some type of a real ending. This will enable readers who do not like that type of book to choose other authors for book purchases, and thus be more apt to be pleased with those purchases.

Not worth the time or money.

*by S***G on Reviewed in the United States on February 24, 2017*

I gave this 1 star because: I read the first four in the series and refuse to purchase the last. The first one was good. The second one was OK. The third was frustrating. And the fourth was horrible. I refuse to purchase the fifth one in order to find out what happens when it should've all been written as one book without the frustration of the lack of material in the 2nd, 3rd and 4th books. I never write reviews. However, I am choosing to in order to save others from the frustration of reading these books. I could actually summarize three out of four of these books in about 10 minutes. Don't bother reading them.
