The pedal will open the bin 3/4 of the way, but you can lift the lid to have it open to a full 90 degrees straight up. The operation is smooth and easy and not too noisy. It does depend how quickly you stamp or release the pedal though. Best of all our 6 month sprocker puppy and 2 year old toddler have not managed to get into it.
