The Mojave Audio MA-301FET is a high-performance large diaphragm multipattern condenser microphone designed for professional audio applications. ## Description

With the MA-301, Mojave has taken the highly musical and transparent MA-201, and added a remote-controlled, continuously variable pickup pattern selector, 15dB pad and a switchable bass roll-off. The MA-301 is built with a hand-selected 3-micron capsule, high-quality Jensen audio transformer, military-grade FET, and custom designed low-noise resistors. Once again, David Royer has created a mic that has the warmth and musicality of classic microphones, with a sonic signature that is all its own. This is a true workhorse condenser that will respond faithfully and musically to almost anything you throw at it. While the benefits of a 15db pad and bass roll off are obvious, one may not realize the benefits of continuously variable pickup pattern selector. From the power supply, you can go from an omni-directional response, to cardioid, to hyper-cardioid, to figure-8, and anywhere in between. We loved experimenting with this unique option, because depending on your sound source/room acoustics, the different polar responses can deliver different results. You not only hear room reflections in varying amounts and ways, the response of the sound source itself is subtly transformed as you turn the dial between patterns. And since the selector is continuously variable, you can really fine tune the response of the mic.

This mic does well with loud sources & provides excellent detail. The high-pass filter can be used without altering the mic's tone or clarity & has a natural sound to it. This mic is a smooth operator & I confidently say it rivals the AKG C414, which I feel tends to have a more dry sound. I recommend this mic for: drums & percussion, vocals, guitars, wind instruments, string instruments, & more. I had the opportunity to experiment with two of these microphones in multiple orchestral & chamber music sessions at the Hot Springs Music Festival this summer (2014). I put it to use on a wide variety of percussion instruments as well as a choir of about 50 people. Not everyone listens to "classical" music these days, but the truth is it can be some of the most demanding audio production any engineer dares to undertake. If a mic sounds good in an orchestral setting, it will absolutely sound good anywhere! The MA-301's multiple patterns allow for even more flexibility & maintains character regardless of pattern. This microphone has excellent clarity & detail while imparting a lovely character that I would describe as smooth, lush & well-rounded. Using this mic on vocals generates unique & tasteful results that any engineer will be proud to produce. While experimenting at the music festival, these mics took some really loud sound without any of the distortion or ugliness sometimes found in lesser-quality LDCs. I would confidently put this mic overhead all styles of drum performance & expect greatness. The MA-301 will also do very well with many types of guitars (acoustic or electric) & capture tone in a way that mixes easily. If you are looking for a solid mic to act as your primary go-to for great tone -- but want something to stand out from the status-quo -- do yourself a favor & buy a MA-301 by Mojave Audio.
