## Description

Breville Smart Grill BGR820XL, Brushed Stainless Steel

Review: An awesome piece of machinery for high-end grilling rock stars - This is my first electric grill... so I don't have much in the way of comparison. But I have to say my experience with this product in the past three months I've owned it has been outstanding. Here's what I think: Pros: - Beefy construction. Everything is high quality, like the hinges and arm locking mechanism look like they are the suspension from from a high end sports car. A beautiful stainless steel work of art. Nice-feeling grippy knobs and bright display. - Great clean up. I didn't expect it really to "clean up with a paper towel" but yes it does. Even after some greasy burgers that I forgot to clean (and the grease hardened on the surface). No problem, still just cleaned up with a paper towel. - Removeable plate. Not that I've ever had to actually clean them in the sink, but yes, they pop on and off no problem, and solidly lock into place. - Heats fast, cooks well. Again, I have no mode of comparison since this is my first grill but it works great for panini and burgers. Beautiful grill lines and exact temp control! This thing is a masterpiece. Cons: - Expensive (but worth it). This is definitely a case of you get what you pay for. I considered cheaper ones... now I couldn't imagine anything less. I love mine and use it at least 3-4 times per week. - It does not include the 2nd grill plate. This would have been nice-- it only comes with one flat and one grill plate. So you gotta buy the 2nd grill plate if you want over/ under grill lines. But overall-- if you can afford it-- BUY IT.
Review: Marvelous Indoor Grill! - Newest Update: Grill still working fine! I am using it now several times per week. It is my favorite and most useful small appliance. The removable plates and the ability to get really hot to sear meat are probably the two best features. When putting the two plates back onto the appliance, just seat the two corner tabs for each plate into the nesting place for them and tap each plate into place. I was trying to seat the connectors on the back of each plate, and it was giving me some trouble, but don't do it that way. The connectors seat themselves when you slide the corner tabs into their little holders. It really is duck soup to reseat the plates if you pay attention to the little corner tabs, only. They go right in, and so does each plate. Then tap each plate to complete seating it. Earlier Update: Try cooking bacon on this grill. It cooks bacon much faster than bacon cooks in a pan, and the clam shell top keeps the bacon flat. There is obviously a lot of grease from a whole tray lined with bacon strips, but it all runs out the back and into the grease tray. Suggestions: When you buy steaks, get boneless ones because the bone can hold the top grill plate above the steak, and the top won't cook. Also, when you buy steaks, be sure to ask for all of them to be the same height, that is, of equal thickness. That way, you can stick a thermometer into one of the steaks (stick it in from the side) and the other(s) will be the same doneness as the first. Always ask for this at the meat counter. Sometimes I forget to, and I am always annoyed when I get home with two pieces of meat that are different thicknesses. As you may be able to tell from the review below, I really love this grill. Great product! I have had two of the previous Breville clam shell grills. The first one died, but I liked it quite a bit so I bought another. They were both good. My husband refuses to eat charcoal or gas-grilled food (especially charcoal) so it isn't worth it for me to try to grill out for myself and then try to fix something for him in the house. So an indoor grill is nice for us. Also the clam shell feature is wonderful because it speeds up cooking a lot. You get so spoiled by it that you don't want to grill things in a pan on the stove at all. Three things that I wished the earlier two Breville grills had were adjustable temperature (never got hot enough to really sear meat), removable grill plates, and a tilted design with grease tray underneath. This new one has all three! I am glad that I didn't wait for the second grill to die before I bought this one. It is a huge improvement in design over the ones I had before, and they were good. Even my husband is happy with it, and he never wants to replace anything that isn't actually broken. The two plates come off easily and go back on fairly easily (you do have to get the hang of getting them back into place). The grill gets as hot as you want and fairly fast. It sears meat just fine. The grease tray is as convenient as one could possibly be. It catches the grease at the back of the grill, but it extends all the way underneath the grill from front to back so that you remove it easily from the front, like pulling out a little drawer. It goes back in very easily. Everything washes up just fine. I love this grill! It was absolutely worth the price for me. I wish I had bought it sooner. I grill loads of things on it. As others have mentioned, I leave it out on the counter. It would be a little hard to store.

## Questions & Answers

**Q: I need help to decide so I get the Breville or T-fal optigrill, do anyone have any experience with the optigrill? Thanks.**
A: I have both. The T-Fal is very clever... and it does what it says it does and can cook a burger and bacon really well. Quality wise, these grills are night and day. The Brevelle is like the "Viking" of grills. Very solid and made very well. The T-Fal is more of Target / Walmart grill as far as build quality. What the Breville will do for you that the T-Fal won't is sear. If you plan to ever cook a good steak, the searing ability of the Breville is amazing. It will heat up to over 500 degrees and cook meat like it should be cooked. The heating elements on the Breville are actually in the grilling plates... very smart and will get hotter then you will ever need. Good luck with the your decision.

**Q: How is this compare to Cuisinart GR-150? Thanks!**
A: It is unfair to compare this to the Cuisinart GR-150 since the GR-150 does not have embedded heating elements. This should be compared to the Cuisinart GR-300ws (elite) which does have embedded elements. Each machine has features that are good but somewhat different from each other but after careful consideration I purchased the Delonghi CGH1030D which I consider the better machine and has waffle plates as well.

**Q: do you have to purchase a second ridged plate to use this machine as a panini maker ? it sounds like it only comes with one ridged and one flat plate.**
A: You're correct, it comes with one griddle and one grill plate. However, the two plates make a panini just fine. The top of the panini will have the grill marks, the bottom will be brown all over. To be perfectly honest, I prefer the griddle side best.

**Q: Does this unit lock for storage?**
A: yes it does but the lock isn't super secure.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ A great indoor grill and panini press
*by A***9 on October 17, 2021*

This is an expensive item. But I have been very pleased with it. I do think it's a bit strange to have one (flat) griddle plate and one grill plate. I went ahead and bought an extra set of plates so now I have two of each. This thing is so versatile. First it's fantastic as a panini press. Burgers ready in half the time (cooked from both sides at once), amazing tuna melts, and more. Or you can open it up flat and have a surprisingly large cooking surface for making pancakes, French toast or whatever. Last night I used it to grill meat and veggies for some fajitas. You can also see the top plate to "hover" above your food so that it acts like a broiler. When making burgers I lift the top plate in broiler mode for melting the cheese on top. It would also be great for open-faced sandwiches, though I haven't done that yet. I really am glad I bought this, it's getting a lot of use. I find it to have even heating, And it's SUPER easy to clean. Are there any downsides? Maybe. It takes up a lot of counter space, or you will need to store it somewhere. It also weighs like 20 lbs, which some people might not want to lug around. But to me those are minor inconveniences. The quality of this thing is exceptionally high. Definitely recommended
