It does have tare function to zero out the scale, "hold" to read the weight, and somewhat of a battery bar. My initial testing either shows the battery full or "dead" - when it is about to power off. Seems like the unit dies to turn itself off, I have not had it long enough to test further. Readings are consistent every time and matches another luggage scale I do have. Unit does not have a backlit display but battery life seems good to do at least 5 back to back weightings, I did not keep on repeating until unit dies. Overall I like this unit, have not had it long enough to do a long term testing but so far it is good. Unfortunately the first unit I received did fail to power on after 3 back to back testing with another luggage scale. I have tested my replacement unit longer and seems to be working as expected. With any electronic devices you are going to have a few defective units but my replacement is working without problems.
