The level of hard drive noise is high enough that an exposed cabinet (no doors) for the hard drive can be heard in a medium size room during quiet scenes of movies and tv shows. But this unit is quieter than most other hard drives I've had in this capacity size when relatively full. **Q: Does this strictly work only for direct tv, or could it work on a fios dvr?** A: This expander will only work with the DirecTV HR34, HR44, and HR54. We have expanders which will work with Fios DVRs on our website DVRdaddy. Thanks! **Q: does it work with tivo** A: I have a Moxi which is similar to a TIVO and it worked wonders. It moved many of my recorded shows to the external drive and now I went from 50% full down to 5% full overnight. You would need to call the manufacturer because they would need to know the model number I would think. **Q: Can you transfer recordings from my receiver to this hard drive?** A: DirecTV does not allow you to transfer the recordings from the internal hard drive to the external expander. But you will not lose the recordings as you can access either the internal hard drive OR the external expander. Worked as advertising, giving a 6X improvement in recording space for programs.Besides the annoyingly bright blue LED's (fixed with black tape), I was disappointed by the level of fan noise. I wouldn't call it loud, but the DVRdaddy fan is much noisier than the Genie alone. My wife immediately noticed the difference. Probably something you can just get used to and live with. The vendor said I could not use the USB port so I will have to send it back. Just be sure you have an ESATA port before you order it. WHY on earth would I want 2 blinking blue lights staring me in the face as I watch TV? You do not need these activity lights if that's what they are, I will know unit is working if I can see my recorded programs.Just a on light would of been plenty that does not blink.________________________________________________________________PS: Changed my review to 5 stars for the following reason.I contacted DVR Daddy support about the blinking lights and they sent me a PDF file on how easy it is to unplug the lights. Just take out the 4 screws, lift the lid and there is the plug for the lights.
