## Description

Yamaha 400-series recorders are made from a special plastic called Eco dear that's made from plants. In addition to being better for the environment than regular plastic, the Eco dear body is also a little more dense, giving these instruments a richer sound that's more similar what you'd hear from a wooden instrument. The YRS-402B is a 3-piece soprano recorder in the key of C, with traditional baroque fingering.

Review: It's good - I give it five stars because desertcart asked if it was easy to learn, for beginners, and had the value for the money. I think all of those are five stars. This is definitely something a beginner could pick up and trust that they're not learning bad habits because of a poorly manufactured instrument, and the sound is nice enough to want to play it. But that's not to say I think it's the best soprano recorder. It's in tune and it plays nicely, but it still leaves something to be desired in the sound. I'm not quite sure what it is. Maybe a nasaly sound, or slightly shrill. Some sort of pressurized sound, I guess. Yamaha tends this way I've noticed in their higher registers. I much prefer the aulos robin for this reason, but this recorder is good for what it is. I purchased it for my 9 year old son who said he wanted to learn, and as we home school and it was for third grade, it seemed appropriate. It easily sounds ten times better than those recorders the kids often get in public school, or what we had as kids in school. For the price, and depending on the purpose, I definitely recommend this recorder. If you are more professional and play the recorder passionately, I think you can find something with a little sweeter of a tone elsewhere. Depends on what you need.
Review: Excellent recorder! - Excellent recorder! As you can see by the images, it's a more refined recorder than the basic student recorder. Slightly more slender. Slightly shorter by 1/4". Arched windway. Eco friendly Ecodear plastic with more density that projects a more wood-like and mellow tone. The 3 lowest holes are spaced slightly closer for better playability. Overall, it has a more refined and elegant look to it. The colors are a nice change from the typical seggshell white or dark brown. One thing I would like to see is a short pouch and dust caps like the alto version comes with. As is, The pouch is full length for a fully assembled recorder. I would have preferred a takedown pocket sized case. I also purchased the alto 402B. Love it, and highly recommend it! These Ecodear recorders are a definite buy! I would REALLY love to see a sopranino and Garklein version! Are you listening Yamaha?

## Questions & Answers

**Q: Does this have an arched windway?**
A: The windway is slightly arched. I can't really tell that it makes much difference in the sound.

**Q: why it is out of pitch in C and fluctuated like a wistle sound?**
A: Mine is spot on (with an extremely sensitive StroboPlus tuner), but only if I am careful about being relaxed, keeping my cheeks full of air, not blowing too fast or too much pressure, keeping the instrument almost level, and not too full of condensation. Best bets: (1) Air speed. Recorders are finicky about air speed. Blow too fast and the tone will sound sharp. Much too fast and the recorder will jump to the next octave and be sharp at that, and can even seem like a whistle with a bead in it. (2) Improper position. Too low and the air speed increases. Same result. (3) Condensation or other obstruction in airway. This can also cause the air to speed up to get past the obstruction. (3) One finger is almost, but not quite, in position, changing pitch as the finger pressure changes slightly. With everything perfect, and a sensitive tuner, you can watch your tone rise and fall as your air speed and pressure change. It's a good exercise to vary your air slightly from a bit low to a bit high, and watch the tone respond. Do this with every note and you will find out quickly if something is wrong with the instrument. More likely, you will find that your tone is completely in your control.

**Q: Anyone else having a problem with a mold odor with this recorder?**
A: That can happen with any wind instrument (but I believe especially a plastic or metal instrument such a recorder and Irish whistle) if it is put back into the case wet. It has to be swabbed out and left out of its case to dry or put into a well-ventilated case until dry. If it happens, washing with soap and water and rinsing well is the remedy for plastic models.

**Q: How does the recorder handle upper register notes on the second octave?**
A: I enjoy the tone I get from this soprano recorder. I’ve been playing the recorder for quite a few years so I have no problems with tone of high notes. It’s a recorder I enjoy playing and have in my collection.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ More dense plastic, easier recorder
*by D***C on October 3, 2025*

The Yamaha recorders made out of premium, plant-based plastic work a little better. The plastic is a little more dense. I don't know if that is really the specific reason why they work better, but they do. The same recorder mold in standard plastic is much less playable. Maybe the tooling is in better condition for the premium plastic assembly line because less of them are made. Under careful scrutiny, the YRS-402B is much easier to play in tune and not overblow the lowest notes than the YRS-302BIII. The YRS-302BIII is the standard plastic version. I wish the YRS-402B wasn't yellow, though.
