## Description

Originally designed to save sidewall wear on radial tires, Radial Chain was the first real brand name in cable chain winter traction products. With a history of performance testing from Alaska to Switzerland and a tire application chart that contains every original equipment tire sold in North America, Radial Chain is an excellent, yet affordable choice in winter traction. Radial Chain’s plastic package is durable, waterproof and recyclable. Chain tensioners SHOULD NOT be used.

Review: good tire chains - these tire chains were good. As long as you get the correct size for the tire you have, they were a good fit for my tires. They could be put on without gloves, but if it is cold outside and snowing, you might want some gloves to put them on just because your hands might get cold. They were also easy to remove. You put them on pretty much like all chains ... lay them flat on the ground, driver your car over them, and wrap them around the tire and clip in place. When I used them, then did not come off when driving in the snow. good value for the money.
Review: Perfect in a pinch - 2022 Subaru Crosstrek. Deep snow and ice. Worked fantastic. Put them only on the front tires, great grip and braking. Of course it’s best to put them on before you hit a blizzard or stuck in the parking lot. You need space to roll them on. An extra bungee or star bungee is key.

## Questions & Answers

**Q: Do these cables have to be constantly readjusted? Also does anybody know how much clearance is required to put the cables on?**
A: As far as re-adjusting, I like to do it soon after initial installation, then it holds pretty well. Mind you, I'm keeping near to the 30mph limit they suggest, and not driving tons of miles (maybe 10-15) - I've used these right in the city right after the snow, when streets have little bare pavement ( so I don't get in trouble ) - not like over a mountain pass in WA or OR. As far as clearance, I've used them on the front of a Saturn SL2 - I wouldn't say they have a lot of clearance. The key for me is turning the tire I'm working on so I can get at the end where I'm hooking up the cables. Reaching around the tire for the inside connection isn't fun, so having the pointing out in front is helpful. You have to be able to move around the tire enough to get the inner "ring" of cable well inside the tire, and the whole assembly centered on the tire. Takes me about 20 minutes each time, because it always seems to be at least a year since the last time I've done it, and I never gain a "knack".

**Q: do they work on ice?**
A: Absolutely, they work on ice.A little story.2am Freezing rain. Going 20mph. just trying to get home. A few more hills to go. Went down a hill into a valley, tried to go up the other side. Almost to the top. Lost traction. Started sliding backwards down the hill. Luckily I was able to keep it on the road. At the bottom of the valley I turned around, and tried to go back the way I came. The same thing. Almost to the top. Lost traction. Started sliding backwards down the hill. What to do? Miles from any homes. 1/4 tank of gas 30 degrees. I could call some one. But they would be in the same trouble. I almost forgot I had these. I go to put these on. I had to hold onto the car to keep from sliding away. (Literately) After putting these on. (with one hand). I was able to claw my way out of the valley. Without the tires slipping once. ( I was taking it easy ) Took me another hour to get home, but it was better that waiting for the ice to melt, in a cold car.Buying another set for my other car, now.

**Q: how do you put them on
?**
A: Check out this video from Security Chain Company's website http://www.scc-chain.com/tire-chain-finder/traction-product-choices/radial-chain/#video. Personally, for my vehicles, I find it a bit easier to "jack " the wheel in which I am working on. This allows me to snug up the chain without the interference of the pavement. Because the chains cover a multitude of tire sizes, this might make it easier or harder for your installation. My truck was the largest tire size that the chain covered, so I have to fight a little bit to make the connections (jacking the wheel helps allot here!). My car is on the opposite end of the scale, so it is rather easy. I strongly recommend these chains for their value. I own 3 sets of these chains for all my vehicles.

**Q: HOW DO THEY DO ON A GRAVEL ROAD?**
A: I used mine over the weekend on a ice/snow covered gravel road. They worked great. I even stopped on the uphill side and had no problem getting started again. I bought them for a 2 wheel drive 1998 Chevy Tracker. I do not know how well thy would work on my 2006 GMC 1500 4 door pickup. A lot more weight to get moving.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Pretty good tire cables for snow and icy roads.
*by C***Z on February 3, 2026*

First off, the reason for the 4 stars, is because it did not come with the rubber buggies to self tighten the cables. I received the chains right before a major snow storm hit. I installed them the night before and they were pretty easy to install. Less than 10 mins and I had them on both tires. They worked as they should and had no issues with it. I got a slightly bigger size for my car, with in minor size difference. I have a 2015 jeep patriot latitude, for reference.
