For best results I recommend mounting a phone without a case though. The mount only holds the phone in a horizontal position but you can put the phone in both horizontal and vertical position based on adjustment of your tripod head...depending on the capabilities of your tripod. This is a high quality item for the price. The design is such that there are no springs or plastic clasps that could break like on some competing models. Note that aluminum is a soft metal when compared to steel so you will see some scratches in it over time - especially in the metal under the dial you use to tighten. This is normal and not a defect given the aluminum construction.
