They last much longer than the Sterno brand / style of fuel cans because these cans have a liquid fuel and a wick, like an oil or kerosine lamp. This means less fuel is burning off while it is lit, and you have a more controlled, steady flame. The Sterno cans contain a gel-like fuel, and the can has an open hole in the top, approximately 2 inches in diameter. This allows the fuel to burn off quickly, and the flame flickers and dances around so you have less-controlled heat. Also, these cans of Bakers & Chefs Safe Heat contain more fuel than do the cans of Sterno. These have 9.24 ounces of fuel in them. Finally, the cans fit perfectly inside the Sterno brand folding camp stove - the one that comes in a blue package, and is item / model number 50002. Amazon sells these stoves, but you can also get them at Wal-Mart for $5.88. (I am not talking about the Coghlan's brand of folding stove, which is in a green package.)I don't know how you intend to use this fuel, but I used it in my kitchen with the Sterno brand folding stove during a 4-day power outage in 2012, and it worked perfectly. They can't be compared to these liquid types; they are too different, so I wouldn't google "sterno" as another answer said. Another liquid brand I saw here on amazon says the shelf life is 20 years. I'm trying to find out if that is true for these also. Since I want to save them for emergency purposes mostly, I can't spend this kind of money on something that is going in the garbage in 3 years. **Q: I know this was already asked, but can this be used to toast marshmallows for a s'more bar?** A: I know they use the Sterno gel type specifically for roasting marshmallows but it is a different chemical than this which is Diethylene Glycol which is a liquid with a wick. Sterno is made from Methanol and Ethanol alcohol gel. **Q: will these fit In the silver holder things that go under the chafer or are those meant to have a liquid filled into them?** A: These will fit under standard chafers. They are already filled with liquid, and you light the wick which burns very hot.
