You put some water on the sponge and then scrape it along surface to get product. It becomes really foamy and you apply that to the surface. I used it on soap scum in my bathroom and it worked really well. I used it in my sink to get some rust looking crud that came off a brillo pad off the surface and it came off after sitting on it for a bit then scrubbing.
