I had no problem whatsoever in using the drawer pulls either opening or closing the drawers. My fingers/hands are small though. If someone has very large fingers you can always grip the drawer sides with both hands to pull open. Personally, I'm glad the door pulls are close to the front of the drawer because it makes the box look better. Would definitely buy again. And I'm picky. One of my best buys on desertcart. The drawers are a bit under an inch deep so I don't think your knife will fit. I bought it to put my expensive ergonomic crochet hooks in and they fit perfectly. The two drawers open and close nicely and the gray lining is really nice.
