Mesh is fine enough to keep tea leaves contained within. Fairly sturdy. So much easier to fill and clean than tea balls. Sits down low enough so tea leaves are all submerged when I use smaller amounts of water (6 or 8 ozs.) compared with other smaller tea leaf devices I have. Fits my widest mugs but I would prefer the “handles” to be just a little bit wider. I love it and have never had anything but loose tea since! Well, the teapot came with a mesh basket and after years of use, it was time for a new basket. I could not find the same one, so I decided to give this a try. Because of the way this basket "fits," it is very hard to pour tea with the basket still on the pot, but I have determined that after the tea has steeped, I can remove the loose tea/basket and it should be fine (the top of the teapot fits into the pot and this basket has handles that keep the top from fitting into the pot).
