These bits have various advantages and disadvantages to a standard ship augers. One advantage is the three cutting blades. They allow for extremely fast boring through wall studs. The tool is hardened trough out, allowing it to chew through nails like they weren't even there. Unlike a ship auger, the blades can be sharpened. I use a small diamond wheel on my dremel tool to freshen up the edge about every 6 months. Nothing has been more unwieldy as an 18" ship auger to drill through single studs. Ship augers have a lot of steel making them expensive. I can't afford to have several different length augers in each size. This lenox bit is about 6" long but can use an extension shaft to get plenty of length. The only drawback I have found with this bit as opposed to a ship auger is its inability to evacuate the chips in a deep hole. Once I drill passed 4" the chips remain in the hole and begin to jam behind the bit. If I'm not careful the bit can get wedged in the hole. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Drills through nail-embedded wood and has a hex shank - and they are very durable! *by L***M on Reviewed in the United States on February 8, 2015* These are really great - first they go through nail-embedded wood without any trouble (which is really important when running electrical wires in a remodel) and they also attach to a standard 1/4" hex shank, so you can use any number of extensions on them and keep going as long/deep as needed. If you are an electrician or even just occasionally run wires through studs you need this set if you don't already have it!They also seem quite durable, I really ran them hard on the last big project and they are fine - I imagine these will last a long time. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Lenox bits *by M***Z on Reviewed in the United States on January 3, 2017* These bits are great and hold up quite well.
