## Description

desertcart.com: Adafruit Electret Microphone Amplifier - MAX9814 with Auto Gain Control [ADA1713] : Electronics

Review: Better than I expected - I was blown away at how sensitive this thing was. I used it for a costume piece that picked up surrounding sounds (ie music), which I then disseminated into a light display. Even when no music was playing, however, this thing was able to pick up some of the faintest sounds; when I had it placed against my temple, I'm pretty sure it was picking up the sound of blood rushing through my veins with my heartbeat. This is nice when you don't want to be fiddling with a gain control, but the fact that it kind of 'normalizes' sounds around you has some consequences I hadn't considered. For one, I had programmed dimmer colors for quieter sounds; this made that whole exercise relatively pointless. Above all else, I didn't have a single issue with this thing--it worked like it was supposed to, without issue, the whole time I was developing with it. I'm pretty impressed.
Review: Works perfect when connected to an arduino - Works perfect when connected to an arduino. Bought three of these to run three different sets of lights for an art project for my daughter. They pick up sounds from even across the room with the highest gain.

## Questions & Answers

**Q: How do you connect this to an arduino uno? Which pins go to which on the arduino board.**
A: A lot of it depends on how you've written your program, because that's where you specify certain pins. If I remember correctly, you will want to specify that the "out" (on the microphone) goes to one of the Analog-to-Digital (ADC) pins--on an UNO, that's A0 through A5 (you'll specify that in your code). You'll want either the 5V or 3V3 on the Uno to connect to VCC on the mic; GND on the mic to one of the ground pins on the Uno.

The "gain" pin on the mic depends on how much gain you want; if you don't connect it, you'll get 60dB of gain; connect it to GND on the mic for 50dB, and connect it to VCC on the mic for 40dB. I recommend you check the results of each to see which one works best for your needs--high gain will pick up every little noise & detail in music, whereas less gain will make the differences between loud & quiet sounds more obvious; it's basically equivalent to 'normalization' in music.

Finally, the AR pin is for the "Attack/Release" ratio, which defaults to 1/4000; this basically determines how quick the mic is to 'react' to sounds, and the default is the most 'reactive' setting. If you want to make it a less so, connect it to either the VCC pin or GND for different settings; odds are good that you'll be happier with the original.

**Q: I want to use it as a p.a. mike. How do i wire it for another amplifier stage?**
A: If your p.a. amp has a mic input, I don't think you will need any more amplification. The AGC has a very wide range.

**Q: I need to feed the output into a 1w 8 ohm speaker. Will this work for that ?**
A: You will probably need a 1 watt audio amp to drive the speaker.

**Q: Since this mic has auto gain, does that mean it wouldn't be useful for determining sound levels?**
A: You can hard-set the gain by wiring the pin to V++ or ground

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Works perfect when connected to an arduino

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Microphones!
*by J***H on July 20, 2021*

I used these microphones as part of a project to enable a recorder that only has line-in to record microphone audio. Powering the microphones directly from a large Li-Ion battery, and using a voltage converter to power the recorder, then supplying decoupling capacitors, with the microphones in stock configuration for gain and attack, and I get perfect line level output back to my recorder. Levels might not be perfectly compliant, but nothing the recorder's own level compensation can't handle. The recorder is stereo, so I used two microphones.
