Review: Smell was very strong, but the product seems solid. - Bought this to use on my lips because I was tired of using chapsticks and balms with a bunch of other junk in them, just wanted to go straight to the source to keep my lips hydrated through winter. I can't fault the product, the packaging is clean and to be fair the butter is a lovely texture, easy to apply, seems high quality. I think my only feedback and the reason I ended up returning this was the smell. Granted, I bought it knowing that it would have a smell. I was just expecting it to be nutty and smoky like the product description suggests (I'd never actually smelled raw shea before). I know everyone's definitions of scent are a little different but I'm not sure I know anyone who would have described the smell as nutty and smoky. I feel like that's being a little too polite. Or maybe it just could do with a mention that it can come off stronger than expected. When I popped the cap I immediately thought it smells like a tire store. I brought it to my husband and asked him what he thought it smelled like and he said it smelled like burnt rubber. I think it wouldn't have been terrible to tolerate if I wasn't planning to use it on my lips which are right under my nose. It was definitely too whiffy there. That said, because this seems like a solid product I did go and instead order the refined version for the similar effects of shea without the harsh smell. Also, feel like this needs to be said, I'd consider going for the refined version anyway if you have a known latex allergy. As soon as I put the shea on my lips they started to tingle uncomfortably, and later so did my mouth. I did some research on why that would be when shea is considered to be fairly un-allergenic and found that raw shea can contain traces of natural latex, which I'm allergic to. Not saying that's what was happening, but it was a similar reaction to when I eat too many figs, or underripe figs, which contain latex in their sap, too. Though supposedly the refined version wheedles most of the latex out. Be wary and always patch test if you're not sure, just wanted to mention because I'm not sure the latex and shea thing is widely known or observed.
Review: UPDATE: Unscented version is awesome - Update: After my original review of the unrefined version the company reached out to me. Great customer service! I decided to try the unscented version and am so glad I did. It's perfect for my sensitive nose. No aroma at all. And the product is doing wonders for my skin after just two days. After sleeping with it on all night I wake up with skin that does not feel dry but moisturizer. Can't wait to see what happens after a week, a month and longer. Apparently raw shea butter both hydrates and moisturizes, unlike other oils and fats. It sinks into the skin AND provides a protective layer. ORIGINAL POST. For a while I've wanted to try pure shea butter for it's great moisturizing properties. Aware that the smell can be a bit much I bought this anyway. The texture is great and it absorbs well. Not greasy at all. My hands feel great. For this is give five stars. The smell, however, is too much for my sensitive nose. It definitely has a smokey aroma and a bit of a chemical smell. It's not something I can use because of it. So for aroma I give it one star, or rather zero. Average it out and it's three stars for me. I'll be passing it along to someone else.

## Questions & Answers

**Q: I thought IVORY shea was REFINED. How can this be UNREFINED if it's IVORY in color? Pls inform me as I need to be certain. Thank you!**
A: there are many sources out there saying WHITE is the real unrefined or that YELLOW is, the truth is that out there, there is both yellow and ivory(white) shea butter that are 100 percent raw/organic/unrefined (REAL) it just matters if it came from the east or west part of africa, i think its from the west it is yellow and from the east it is the whiter color, the reason for this is because of the nut that its came from differs in color depending on what part of africa. With that said you can still have a fake product that isnt 100 percent unrefined or truly real shea butter even if its the color you think it should be. Although I honestly believe this product is legit, and one of the few real ones on amazon.

**Q: How does this come packaged? I'm okay with some melting...but don't want it melted out of the package on the front porch.**
A: Mine arrived today totally liquified. The inner bag had leaked and a very small amount seeped through the outer packaging. It was nearly a hundred here so if you live in a hot climate, I'd wait to order it until cooler weather arrives. It hardened once I put the unopened bag in the refrigerator and I think it will work fine

**Q: I can't find the label that says organic on the product?**
A: I only buy organic, with few exceptions, label or not, and I'm buying this product. Labeling is kind of a tricky thing. For instance, in Sweden, where artisan coffee is a huge thing, companies come up with their fair trade labels they mark their products with in addition to adding an organic label on it. But there is nothing that says that the whole production chain is 'fairly traded'. Same thing goes with organic cotton in clothing. It may be the case that the fabric is organic, but the dye used is extremely toxic and not organic at all.In regards to the US, I found this article that seems to point out how products get USDA certified despite having non-organic ingredients. http://www.thedailygreen.com/healthy-eating/eat-safe/3980. It unfortunately makes shopping for organic healthy products even harder when you can't trust that the labeling is 100% transparent, so as consumers we need to be even more savvy and smart in our decision making. As far as buying organic comes, I look for raw and unrefined products as much as possible, like this product seems to be. In this case I wouldn't be to bother to much about a label. I try to avoid processed anything as much as possible and am fortunate enough to live on the country side where I can trade organic foods with my neighbors. When I lived in NY, I looked for locally grown, unprocessed foods as much as possible and whenever I could go upstate, I would bring food from the local farms back to the city and throw in the freezer.I also do research on how to buy organic without relying too much on a label to guide me as well as finding out exactly what foods and products to avoid WITH labeling and what is OK to consume with a label.Good luck!

**Q: Is this grade A?**
A: Do you understand what Grade A means, truly? The American Shea Butter Institute is a private institution that offers shea butter testing at $600/batch, and they have created an arbitrary Grades classification that ranges from Grade A which they call "premium" to Grade F, defined as "shea moisturizer". While we do respect their purpose and activities, we have chosen to keep things simple and follow standard FDA and USDA regulations in selling cosmetic ingredients. All our products, including shea butter, are tested by an independent lab (not the Shea Butter institute) on a regular basis and at a fraction of the cost, thus allowing us to offer premium quality butters and oils at a reasonable price. We are proud of our high quality shea butter, you should give it a try and if you are not 100% satisfied you can return the item for a full refund.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Real Buttery Shea Butter
*by A***A on June 8, 2014*

Prior to purchasing this, I had only ever used the yellow shea butter by a different company. While waiting for this one to arrive I bought a tiny jar of the white butter at Whole Foods because I was completely out. While I like the other brand, I absolutely LOVE Better Shea Butter's brand; it is not whipped (the Whole Foods brand was) and was soft, pliable, easy to apply to my skin. Sometimes I get excited when I get a new product and tend to use too much, so I took it easier with this and it paid off. I only use a small amount for skin moisturization and it does moisturize superbly. I will admit to a rather complicated skin care routine as I am a product junkie, but here is what I do to keep my body smooth and soft: argan oil goes on my skin first thing after a shower, then shea butter, then Kiehl's body lotion. I have experimented with various butters and oils; coconut oil (too greasy and does not absorb well), avocado butter (good, but greasier than shea), cocoa butter (very greasy but does the job), sesame oil (terrible, does not absorb at all and leaves skin strangely dry beneath the oil), olive oil (will do in a pinch when I am out of argan oil). But shea butter is my all-time favorite because it has a bit of sun protection in it - my fair skin does not burn but turns a nice golden color. All that said, I didn't know what I was missing by using the yellow butter rather than the white! The texture is smoother and does not harden even in my air-conditioned house. It absorbs into the skin even better than the yellow and this brand better than the other white butter I bought (AAA brand). It is a massive amount that I am sure will take me through the summer. And even though temperatures here in the South are in the upper 80s right mow, this chunk-o-butter arrived only soft, not melted though it had been on a carrier vehicle all day. It would have even been okay with me if it were melted but nice that it wasn't. I had some pesky dry skin flaking off my legs (why is it that legs dry out more than arms even when less exposed to the elements? One of life's mysteries...). Even with exfoliation and my meticulous skin care routine the condition persisted. However, this shea butter has significantly reduced the problem with just two applications and I fully expect it to be "cured" with several more uses. This is real shea butter, folks - the best I've used. The price is actually a steal too. I can't comment on use for hair or face. My hair is too fine to withstand heavy oils and butters but I bet that someone with thicker or more coarse hair would benefit greatly from it. My skin is pretty oily right now so I can only see myself using it there in the wintertime when skin is drier. I am greatly impressed with this company's customer service. Isabella has been right on top of things with personal emails thanking me for my order and information on downloading recipes. That she has taken time to do this with each and every person who places an order speaks volumes about her business ethic. I had pored over the reviews for this shea butter as well as other brands and was satisfied that all the reviews were genuine. She also responded to the few negative reviews with grace. This is a company who believes in its product and cares about its customers, and I am happy to recommend this outstanding product.
