    The best I've found to explain what it's like being autistic

I highly recommend this book, both if you have an autistic child or interact with an autistic person, or if you are autistic yourself.If you are autistic, as I am, then this book can give you insight into the way your mind works. Most books only list the behaviors that autistic people have; this book digs deeper into the why behind the behavior. For example, I now know the reasons behind why I have a hard time recognizing people's faces and why I was so very echolalic growing up, and many other insights. Even in places where the information comes too late to be of direct use, the knowledge is vindicating.If instead you have an autistic child or friend or coworker, this book has useful advice to make interacting with that person more painless for both of you. But, most books have that sort of information. Where this book excels is describing what it's like to be autistic. No book can every truly convey what the experience is like, but this one does the best so far. It does a great job of covering what the sensory issues and social perception issues are like, without resorting to the cliched "alien from another planet" metaphor.If you want a survival guide or a concise list of tips for interacting with an autistic person, this book isn't really for you. If you want a deeper understanding of autism, then you definitely need this book.

The information in the book is 10-20 years old. Even though she does present some good information, most of the information she is basing it on is out dated. In this day and age, and with how much research that has occurred on the subject of autism, I would be weary of everything she is saying.  Find a newer book, with new information and data in it.  I find quite a few of the statements in this book to be a bit outlandish.  Also it is mainly a lot of quoting other people and her just jumping from one source to another...
