They do need to be washed (many times) to get rid of the starchy stiffness. However, the patterns do NOT match what you see in the photo as advertised. They floral pattern is the same on each one, and the only difference is the that the boarder of the hanky is one of 4 different pastel colors ( pale yellow, pale blue, pale green and pink). They have a feminine-styled design of tiny delicate flowers, but I was hoping for more variety and larger floral patterns. There are two in each color. I washed, softened and dried 3x, but they are still rough. I wash mine in a lingerie bag and then dry them flat on a drying rack, otherwise they’re really wrinkly when they come out of the dryer. I think this will also make them last longer. All in all, good product and good price. I have enough of them to use a new one each time I need it and so I use much less tissue.
