I would never employ this at further than (literally) a foot and half away...and you MAY get one full second of use. (Cause you know that's what you're going to do...is hold down on the actuator till it's spent. This device MIGHT give you a split second advantage over a bigger/stronger/younger assailant, but it MUST be put to use with the element of surprise. There's just not that much product in the little canister.
