You just need to place your hands in the trays (filled with water) on the electrodes which have plastic electrode covers around them. There are 2 stages to iontophoresis treatment. Stage 1 is the most time consuming but most important. You need to start out on a low current and gradually increase the strength. Iontophoresis treatment must always be comfortable. Some people will start off with too high a current for their skin and this can cause skin irritation. You must be patient with the choice of current used and only increase to a level which is comfortable for your skin. You do not need to get to the highest strength of current. You can carry out up to 20 days' worth of treatment in Stage 1 or if you become dry before then, you should stop and move on to the Maintenance Phase. You should notice a reduction in your sweating around day 14. When you move on to the Maintenance Phase the method recommended in the user manual for determining the interval between treatment in this phase is often used. With this method you first try an interval of 6 days, then 8 days, 10 days and so on. You then stop increasing the interval if you feel your sweating is starting to return. Some people are able to monitor what timescale is best for them as their skin starts to become more clammy again when the excess sweating is returning. That is the point or ideally just before that point is the best time to do a maintenance session. You do need to use iontophoresis treatment long term to combat excessive sweating but once you are in the Maintenance Phase you should be able to reduce the amount of treatments you have to carry out. Some people may only have to carry out 2 or 3 treatments per month – it all depends on how your skin reacts to the treatment.
