These buttons are shiny with a bit of varnish on, it does state that in the description. I wanted them to look a bit more natural so i took a little bit of sandpaper and rubbed the polish off. It was not hard to do. I washed them off and the water helped the different colours in the wood to show up. I love the look of these more natural, but they are fine to use as is, depends on your taste. Great value for this amount of buttons, they feel sturdy enough to be used on garments.
