What I did in the precise order it was done: Connect regulator hose to the generator. Connect adapter to the regulator end of hose. Screw on 1 lb propane bottle to adapter. No tools, no leaks. Adapter DOES NOT HAVE A CHECK VALVE. I used 3.2 oz of propane running the generator for 14 minutes with a 1,240 watt load. Generator ran smoothly. no leaks, no hiccups. This adapter did exactly what I need it, SAVE my back. When I was done with the test I reversed the order from before: Unscrew propane bottle from adapter ( I did this 3 times to make sure the first time was not a fluke). Unscrew adapter from regulator. Unscrew hose from generator. I never disregard when someone here has a bad experience with a product, however with the adapter that was sent to me everything worked perfectly and I do recommend the adapter, it worked without leaks and there was no gas spraying from bottle. I recommend keeping propane bottle fully upright during connecting and use.
