But this compass doesn’t hold its setting very well. You can open and close it without turning the wheel. Which is nice for rapid gross adjustment but could potentially allow it to slip if you press too hard while using it. **Q: Can you remove the metal pointy bit? I see that there is an adjustment wheel on the side with the pointy part....wondering if it can be removed?** A: The side (on the right in the picture) with the adjustment wheel at the bottom can hold any pencil or other similar sized object. I DON'T see that you can remove the sharp point (on the left in the picture) that goes at the center of the arc but I don't understand why you would want to. **Q: What maximum diameter circle will it draw?** A: The compass will open to about 5 inches - so a radius of 5” (diameter of 10”). **Q: Is the holder large enough to hold a sharpie mark?** A: The hole size for the pencil is approx 12 mm x 13 mm. It's not exactly square; it has curved sides. It can easily hold an ultra fine point Sharpie. I can insert a fine point Sharpie. But only to a certain depth. I lived the little personalized note that comes with it. It works great and adjusted smoothly and stays where it's set. It feels strong and durable in your hand and the pivot point tip is sharp and stays in place. Only down side us mine came without the locking nut on the little screw that holds pencil holder in the frame. At first, I wasn't concerned about it, but I emailed the company anyway, they returned my email promptly and never questioned my claim and sent me not only one locking nut but 3 sets of nuts and screws.
