I hope this is helpful in someway!My little one was supposed to start Pre-K this year, but with the pandemic and school closures, I decided to homeschool her instead. That being said, I wanted her experience to be as similar to going to an actual Pre-K as possible. This Circle Time Center Chart is great because it includes so many categories of daily or weekly themes that I plan on teaching. I have been using this chart for about 3 weeks now and am happy with it for the most part. Here are some of the pros and cons I have noted so far:PROS:1) It is actually quite sturdy. The dark blue background is made of a nylon material, similar to the feel of a gym bag. It is thick and I don’t worry that it could tear as plain plastic would. Also, I used 2 medium sized Command hooks to hang it on the wall, which worked great.2) Although I have a separate classroom calendar, I like to use the date and day of the week function on this chart in addition to it. My little one is starting to understand how to “read” the date in month/day/year order, and she loves to move the star to the current day of the week.3) My other classroom calendar has a weather section to it as well, but I like the one on this chart because it includes other details, such as the type of clothing you might wear on a sunny day, that add value to it. Also, the wheel that spins is made of very thick and sturdy felt-like material that holds its shape without bending.4) The punch out cards are pretty thick. It is glossy on the front side of it, similar to that of laminated paper or a photograph, but the backside is plain paper. It can’t get wet but it seems like it will hold up well.5) There are wonderful categories included on the chart which help my little one remember which letter, color, shape, and number we are reviewing that day/week.6) The gum ball machine is also very sturdy and well made. The felt background isn’t the type that gets worn too easily, although I’m sure after multiple times of pulling off the circles it will wear it down. Also, the “gum balls” themselves are very thick and stiff. The Velcro is secured on well and has a strong hold, but not too strong that a child could not pull it off.7) Everything is hands on and my little one loves to change out the cards each day.8) The chart is very well organized and easy to read.CONS:1) Here is the reason I could not give this chart 5 stars. I truly love the layout and construction of this chart, however, my biggest question is, who was in charge of choosing the words??? It seems like there was very little thought put into the words. Here are just a few examples: - They have a handful of cards dedicated to rhyming words. Unfortunately, they chose words that don’t actually rhyme. For example, “good” and “food, “watch” and “lunch”, and my favorite, “hat” and “boat”. Sure, they all end in the same letters, but that does NOT make them rhyming words. - For each letter, there are two words that start with that letter. For the most part, the word choices are fine, but for “B”, they chose “boat” and “BEER”. I had to laugh when I saw that. Could they really not think of a better word for “B” than “beer”? - Another example of where better words could have been chosen is when letters make more than one sound. Although most kids learn the short vowel sounds before learning the long vowel sounds, I think it’s great to expose children to the different sounds letters can make. That being said, I wish this chart was more consistent with the sound choices. For example, for the letter “I”, they chose the words “ice cream” and “iron”. There’s nothing wrong with those words, but it would have been nice if they had included a word with the short “I” sound as well. Then for “A”, they chose two words with short vowels only. Yet for “E”, they chose the short vowel sound for one, and then threw in a curve ball with the word “earth”, which is neither the short or long vowel sound. - Also, certainly not as big of a deal, but for “G”, they chose the word “glove”. However, they included a picture of mittens, and when I asked my little one what word she thought it was, she rightfully said “mittens”. But even if they were to have used a picture of gloves, they wrote “glove” instead of “gloves”. (On a side note, they used words that start with the classic “G” sound (glove) and also the “J” sound (giraffe).)2) I don’t know how to explain this, but the cards were punch out style, which made it a bit more cumbersome to take apart, as opposed to cards that are perforated without spaces between each card.3) At $60, I felt that this was VERY expensive compared to other typical classroom charts that are about the same size. There were no reviews at the time I purchased it, so I was a bit weary about spending so much money on it. However, it was the only one I could find like it so I went ahead and took a chance. The fact that it was well organized and well constructed made me feel a little better about it, but still, it’s pretty pricey.Overall, I really do like this chart. As for the word choices, I just flipped the cards over and wrote/drew my own actual rhymes and a replacement word for “beer”. Oh, and by the way, the calendar years go from 2020 to 2023. I don’t have any younger children I plan on using this for, but it seems for the price, they could have included a few more years.
