These extra thick micro-fine polyester pads effectively trap micro particles and debris as water passes through. Review: I tried to use just standard polishing pads that I clumped up and replaced my self but it does not fit in the filter tray as well. It is indeed much easier to pay a little extra for a good polishing pad that fits perfectly in your Fluval canister filter. This filter is also a must if you want clean polished water that does not have a lot of small particles floating around in your tank that make it look cloudy. Keep in mind this does almost nothing for biological filtering its main purpose is to remove small particles from the water column so that your water looks nice and clear. The place is also important to extend the life of this filter. I personally place it in the bottom tray above the black (medium course) filter pads. above that, I have my 3 trays of biological media.
