The device uses an FTDI chip, which are fairly common. Some Windows computers will have the drivers for it, so when you plug in the USB cable, it will automatically install the driver and show up as a serial port COMx in the device manager (with x a number, depending on your hardware). In a few cases I had to install the correct drivers. The unit comes with a small CD (mini CD) that can be used for it, except these days it is non rare to have a PC without reader. In that case, just go to the FTDI website and download the driver package. It should be fairly easy to find.
