Surgical masks technically protect the people around you from your germs while high filtration respirators(N95 and above) protect you from theirs. In a hospital setting where there are many sick people, you never know if you’re going to run into a jackpot or not. Now I’m not saying you shouldn’t be wearing surgical masks when you’re in public. These do give you some protection because they’re water resistant, but they work best when the people around you are also wearing masks to keep their germs away.
