All it does is allow the user to copy files from one older, uninstalled HDD or SSD to second unit, or a computer without having to go through the additional step of copying files to CD-Rom or thumb drive formats. Once this device is connected to the old drive, and then connected to your computer, the computer looks at this old drive as one of its own. You can copy any files to the HDD or SSD in your computer directly Unless the files you want to transfer to the computer are encrypted, you should have no problem, since the password on the old drive is only for the Windows operating system to seek and unlock the computer for authorized users The password for the computer does not encrypt any the files on the computer. The IDE connection works but was glitchy with one drive that was probably healthy, it'd run for a while then quit talking to my desktop. Tried it with several other drives and couldn't duplicate so it might've been a bad drive not the Inateck.
