## Questions & Answers

**Q: Can you break the capsules into the cats food easily?**
A: Have been giving these to my small female tabby at the night feeding for years. I open the capsule (which is very easy) and pour the contents right onto the middle of the wet food pile, then cover over with a small amount of the food. I then (and I do this for the young male who doesn't get the Cosequin) pour a little boxed broth (beef or chicken) into the empty cat food can and swish/rinse it then pour that over the food. The female has always eaten the food Cosequin and all.

**Q: Can this safely be used with begining stage kidney issues?**
A: I called the company (888-886-6442) because my 16 yr. old cat also has kidney issues and I was told by them that it is fine to given them the Cosequin. Their safety studies have shown no problems. FYI, my cat has shown good improvement with the product.

**Q: I see no msm in this. I thought cats needed this as well. Has anyone tried something with msm? Does it make a difference?**
A: 1."MSM" stands for "Methylsulfonylmethane"; and Chondroitin is basically the Chondroitin Sulphate form in the joints.2.MSM helps in controlling rheumatoid arthritis; Chondroitin helps in controlling osteoarthritis.Pasted from <http://www.differencebetween.net/science/health/drugs-health/difference-between-msm-and-chondroitin/Cosequin® for Cats?Cosequln, the #1 Veterinarian recommended retail joint health supplement brand, plays an important role in maintaining optimal joint function. Healthy articular (joint) cartilage is crucial to joint utility. Cosequin helps support cartilage production and protect against existing cartilage from breakdown. Cosequin contains FCHG49® Glucosamine Hydrochloride and TRH122® Sodium Chondroitin Sulfate*, an exclusive trademarked combination of ingredients. Cosequin is manufactured following standards similar to those practiced by the pharmaceutical industry. There are not many joint support options available specifically for cats. There are some products used in dogs that are not as safe in cats. Cosequin for Cats has been shown to be safe in cats. Cosequin provides joint health support while maintaining your cats comfort level. Some veterinarians also recommend Cosequin for cats to help support urinary bladder health. The inner lining of the bladder wall is protected by a layer that contains some of the same compounds found in cartilage. This layer helps protect against urine and the waste products contained within it from seeping into and affecting the inner lining of the bladder. Since the low molecular weight chondroitin sulfate found in Cosequin is available to more than just cartilage cells, the bladder may use it to help support this protective layer. Cosequin for Cats comes in a convenient sprinkle capsule specially formulated for cats. Pasted from <http://www.nutramaxlabs.com/cosequin-cat-product-lines> For Dogs: All of the ingredients used in Cosequin are listed on the manufacturer's web site. The formula is a combination of Glucosamine HCl, Chondroitin Sulfate, and MSM (Methylsulfonylmethane). MSM provides elemental sulfur, a basic building block for joints and cartilage. However, MSM has not been recognized as GRAS (Generally Recommended As Safe) The purpose of this product is to provide support for healthy connective tissues in aging dogs. - Pasted from <http://doghealthpanel.com/cosequin-review> No mention was given to usage in Cats. However after research : Nutramax Laboratories does has a supplement "Cosequin® for Cats - Professional Line" with Boswellia Serrata Extract --- Extracts of Boswellia serrata have been clinically studied for osteoarthritis and joint function, particularly for osteoarthritis of the knee, with the research showing a slight improvement of both pain and function compared to a placebo.4 Positive effects of Boswellia in some chronic inflammatory diseases including rheumatoid arthritis, bronchial asthma, osteoarthritis, ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease have been reported.5 A Boswellia extract marketed under the name Wokvel has undergone human efficacy, comparative, pharmacokinetic studies.678 Some see Boswellia serrata as a promising alternative to NSAIDs, warranting further investigation in pharmacological studies and clinical trials.

**Q: Anyone else notice that recent capsules/powder have unpleasant smell?**
A: Yes! Ordered 2 bottles back in Jan. 2017 (both with EXP date on Jan 2020), one bottle was ok but the secomd one had a very strong distinct stale smell right as soon as I opened it; gave it to my cat anyway, less than a week after he developed a bad itchy reaction all over his head to the point I had to take him to the vet where we also compared the Cosequin bottles and the vet agreed that mine had a very bad smell. I've been using Cosequin for about 2 years, pills have a bit of smell but not that strong and aweful smell I experienced last; cannot return it cause, by the time I opened the second bottle 30 days has gone by :-( . Next time, 1 bottle at the time and I won't order from a third party merchant.

## Customer Reviews

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Love the easy to serve 80 count pack
*by on Reviewed in the United States June 23, 2026*

Love this cat joint supplement. It's easy to serve and the 80 count pack is super convenient to keep on hand. Safe for pets, made with high quality ingredients, and it clearly supports joint health. Plus it's manufactured in the US, which matters to me. Great pick.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ It works well, try it in water if your cat refuses it on food.
*by on Reviewed in the United States May 5, 2026*

This supplement seems to have worked almost immediately. My cat is 14 and had slowed way down recently. Last week, she had a noticeable limp, not wanting to put weight on her back left foot. I took her to my vet and he said it’s just arthritis. I asked if a supplement would be safe to take (she has kidney concerns) and he said just make sure it doesn’t add protein—this product fit that criterion. She didn’t like it sprinkled on her food, turned her nose up at it, tried to cover it like in the litter box. Then I mixed it with about a cup of fresh water, and she loves it and has been moving around pretty well the last few days. I keep two water bowls out, one with supplement, one without—she completely finishes the supplement water each day and has regular fresh water as a backup. (If I’d mixed it in the main bowl, she wouldn’t finish it each day as that bowl is never empty. The second bowl allows me to monitor the intake and ensure she finishes a capsule every day.) Long winded way of saying this stuff works, and try the water if the food doesn’t work for you. Don’t give them the whole capsule—it has artificial colors.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Easy Urinary Crystals Prevention
*by on Reviewed in the United States April 11, 2013*

"Urinary crystals?" you ask? Glucosamine helps to replenish glycosaminoglycan, an element in the lining of the cat's stomach. This lining helps prevent urinary crystals, which can be fatal if untreated. One of my cats, 2 years old, twice had blockages from urinary crystals. At the second incident, the veterinarian prescribed 2 pills per day with a meal (the big boy cat is a 17 pounder - I believe under 10 pounds takes just 1 per day). I also feed him wet cat food intended for urinary tract health (Pro Plan Canned Cat Food, Adult Extra Care Urinary Tract Chicken Entrée In Gravy, 3-Ounce Cans (Pack of 24)), and I add 1/8 cup of water to a 3oz cat of food with the meal that gets the 2 pills of medicine. I add the water to the food because he refuses to drink from a bowl or cat fountain. The 2 prior incidents occurred 3-4 months apart. Fortunately, since starting this new regimen of combined medicine with additional water and special cat food, it has been about 5 months with no scares. The medicine comes in powder form inside of a pill. I prepare and mix the water with the wet cat food, and then pull the plastic pill apart and spread the powdered medicine on top of the well-mixed food (not too wet or the cat doesn't like it). The medicine is flavored and sometimes the cat will eat only the powder as a treat and come back later for the food/water combo. Whether it's the cat food, the extra water, the pills, or a combination - my cat is healthier. This price on Amazon is stellar. I have purchased several bottles and the quality seems consistent from purchase to purchase. 5 stars, highly recommended.EDIT 12/8/13. It has now been over a year since I have been administering the Cosequin in conjunction with a pure wet food diet ph balanced for cats with crystals (aforementioned Purina Pro Plan, and Friskies special diet for urinary health). I also add quite a bit of water. The cat has been crystal-free. I did take him to the vet once for what I thought was a crystal scare, but it turned out to be stress induced inflammation and he was not blocked with crystals. I'm going to keep up with this great product. Give it a shot!EDIT 9/16/2020. I am still giving the cat 1 pill per day (down from 2 at onset). This cat has not had a crystal episode for 8 years! I don’t know if it’s the diet, the pill, or a combination, but I’m not stopping! Very affordable way to help pet quality of life. I recommend this stuff wholeheartedly and stand by my 5 star rating!EDIT July 2024:This cat is still alive at 14 years old and still has not had another bladder incident. In fact, he’s now in better health than his brother from the same litter who we thought was the healthy one. He’s still getting 1 pill per day, and the brother I’m giving 2 every other day to help with his arthritis. The bladder cat is down to 13 pounds and is full of vitality and energy and no signs of arthritis. Maybe these pills have had a double-benefitting effect? I plan to continue giving these pills until they pass away. 5 stars, all the way.I still feed Purina Pro Plan Urinary (chicken) for 1 meal but the other meals are now Weruva flavors that have pumpkin included. They both started having constipation in their old age and the pumpkin seems to assist. Totally unrelated to the pills, but just anecdotal data. He also still refuses to drink water so we continue with mixing in with the urinary food, and putting the pill on top of that meal. They gobble it up.
