For fine grind, rotate clockwise and for coarse grind rotate anti clockwise. Put coffee beans in the top section and test your setting with a few turns of the handle until you achieve your preferred coarseness. So that's good. However, I had to wait for over a week for a reply to my emails (I sent a chaser) because they were on holiday.Also, another problem I noticed with the grinder is that a LOT of metal dust/shavings is accumulating below the adjustment knob, presumably because of the grinding action and soft metal (or possibly the coating which I mentioned in my original review) being used. This is inevitably also falling into my coffee; not cool. IMO this relegates the grinder to decorative duties ONLY.I don't have much reason to doubt the replacement will be any different, but I will nevertheless give a new one a try and update this review (again) when I have it.**UPDATE 7 June 2016**The grinder is now broken, just over a month after receiving it and using it 1-3 times a week. The part that broke is the little nut that holds the handle to the stem, more specifically the screw threads have stripped due to cheap metal being used, so now the handle comes off whenever we use it, and the adjustment locking tab will no longer lock as a result, making it all but impossible to grind anything. It's a shame, because the burrs themselves seem quite decent, though I cannot speak as to their longevity.I did send an email out to the seller over the weekend, and have not received a response yet. I will update this again when and if the seller comes back.**end update**I admit I bought this grinder mainly because of the looks. The star rating also helped, since there are quite a few other grinders out there that look like it.As far as grind consistency goes, this is pretty good, it's a lot better than my porlex knock-off for sure. However, there are a number of issues I have with this grinder:1. the ease of grinding is not as good as the knock-off due to the shorter handle and the shape of the grinder which is much harder to grip comfortably;2. the tiny tray cannot hold as much as the hopper, which means you have to empty it half way through grinding, and emptying the tray into something small like a moka pot funnel is difficult without half the grounds not going where you want; and3. the metal is coated with some cheap paint-like material, similar to the fake chrome you get on low quality plastic showerheads and the like, and mine already had a couple of small chips in the coating (and a moderately sized dent/scratch in the wood). I really don't want this to end up in my coffee, and it will flake off eventually, and reduces the life of the grinder for no good reason (uncoated metal would have been better).All of the above considered, I was tempted to give this a 3 star rating at first, but I do like the looks of this little machine quite a lot, and it doesn't fail to impress there, and neither does the actual grinding performance. Plus, taking into account the price, it is difficult to expect perfection, so I've given it 4 stars. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ ... I am kind of a century girl and I like vantage looks things *by J***D on Reviewed in the United States on October 6, 2016* I gave this a 5 star - I am kind of a century girl and I like vantage looks things, this is perfect for me, I purchase fresh coffee been, and OOOOO - Boy! the coffee smells and taste so great and fresh, let me tell you.. just to give you a bit of how this operate, I use 1 scoop are 1 table spoon coffee bean adjusted the level to medium grind, when you turn the handle you can here the grinding of the coffee, and while it doing that the coffee aroma is in the air, and OOOOOO- boy! again I can wait to drink a cup. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Nice and small *by C***N on Reviewed in the United States on March 30, 2016* It's nice, and it works. It took me a little while to figure out how to adjust the coarseness, but I got that figured out quickly. For me it's just not big enough. It easily let's you grind enough for a cup of coffee, but to get enough for my french press I need to fill the little coffee drawer 3 times. Just wanted to point that out.
