## Overview

The Adafruit Audio FX Sound Board (16MB flash) is a compact, standalone audio playback module designed for creators who want to add high-quality sound effects without programming. Featuring 11 trigger inputs and versatile playback modes, it supports drag-and-drop WAV/OGG files via USB and delivers crisp stereo sound powered by dedicated decoding hardware. Ideal for costumes, props, toys, and portable projects, it runs on 3-5.5V DC and integrates easily with headphones, speakers, or amplifiers.

## Description

Would you like to add audio/sound effects to your next project, without an Arduino+Shield? Or maybe you don't even know how to use microcontrollers, you just want to make a sound play whenever you press a button. What about something that has to be small and portable? You are probably feeling a little frustrated: it's been very hard to find a simple, low cost audio effects trigger that is easy to use and does not require any programming. This board has 11 Triggers! Connect up to 11 buttons or switches, each one can trigger audio files to play. Headphones, powered speakers or even wire up an amplifiers to make loud sounds when plugged into the stereo line out. You can create five different types of triggers which will cover a large range of projects without any programming. What do we mean by trigger effects? Depending on your project you may need to have audio play in different ways. Triggers include Basic, Hold Looping, Latch loop, Play Next, and Play Random. The sound board is designed to be simple: it does not have polyphonic ability, can't play MP3's (MP3 is patented and costs $ to license, so this board uses the similar but not-patented OGG format, there's tons of free converters that will turn an MP3 into OGG), isn't reprogrammable or scriptable, and you can't have any other kind of trigger type. However, there's a good chance the project you want to make will work great. Item Specifics: Size: 22mm x 48mm x 6mm / 0.9" x 1.9" x 0.2", Weight: 4.7g,Header pins require soldering

Review: Make sure you get the right one! Can be triggered via serial UART! - I saw some confused and unhappy customers on another page, so I wanted to point out that there are 6 versions of the Adafruit FX Sound Board board, so just make sure to order the one you want! I've listed them and their main differences at the end. I chose this version because I am using UART to trigger the audio from another microcontroller, so I don't need the extra trigger pins. I am mounting the board inside of a larger enclosure with other components, so I am running my own headphone jack back to the same side of the board as the USB connector. I also have the FeatherWing Music maker, but that uses the VS1053B chip, and I found that the additional strain on my nrf52 was causing problems with bluetooth running. This board uses the vs1000 chip, which is a full "system on a chip," and it happily runs on its own without conflicting with any of the bluetooth timing. Another advantage is that I had to lower the audio quality on the FeatherWing's files to get them to play correctly. But this board, again, happily blows thorough high frequency, high quality files without issue, and it sounds great! PRODUCT ID: 2342 Mini version with 2MB flash, no jack, and 8 trigger pins (this desertcart listing) PRODUCT ID: 2341 Mini version with 16MB flash, no jack, and 8 trigger pins PRODUCT ID: 2133 Standard version with 2MB flash, jack, and 11 trigger pins PRODUCT ID: 2220 Standard version with 16MB flash, jack, and 11 trigger pins PRODUCT ID: 2210 Standard version with 2MB flash, 2x2W amp, and 11 trigger pins PRODUCT ID: 2217 Standard version with 16MB flash, 2x2W amp, and 11 trigger pins
Review: Perfect for custom car horns - I purchased this after seeing Mark Rober's video on the Worlds Most Polite Car Horn. While the setup and installation was not super difficult, it was far from a simple task. There is some soldering you'll have do to get the header pins installed on this board (headers included - soldering iron and supplies not included). You'll also need a way to connect the wires that you have coming to/from the buttons to this unit. And then you'll have to find a way to house this unit in some sort of case to protect it. If you're considering purchasing this item because you want to set your car like the one in the Mark Rober video, please know that it certainly can be done, but it'll take quite a bit more work than what was described in the video. Also, don't be temped to get one of those <$20 amplifiers. I tried one. Absolute garbage. Not nearly loud enough - couldn't even hear the sound when sitting in my truck with the door closed and engine off.

## Questions & Answers

**Q: Is this version with the built in 2.2w?**
A: For anyone else looking at these, here's a breakdown of all the versions from my review:
PRODUCT ID: 2342 Mini version with 2MB flash, no jack, and 8 trigger pins (this Amazon listing)
PRODUCT ID: 2341 Mini version with 16MB flash, no jack, and 8 trigger pins
PRODUCT ID: 2133 Standard version with 2MB flash, jack, and 11 trigger pins
PRODUCT ID: 2220 Standard version with 16MB flash, jack, and 11 trigger pins
PRODUCT ID: 2210 Standard version with 2MB flash, 2x2W amp, and 11 trigger pins
PRODUCT ID: 2217 Standard version with 16MB flash, 2x2W amp, and 11 trigger pins

**Q: Can you record 3 different sounds and then select a sound to play by pushing a button or are you limited to just one sound?**
A: You can’t record with this board. You can preload 8 different sounds and select which one to be played by grounding any of pins 0-7. You could do this with 8 buttons or use a micro controller to control which sound is played.

**Q: could this board be used to provide a time delay between microphone and speaker to prevent feedback howl in a public address system?**
A: You pre-record sounds or audio clips to the board. When the board receives a low signal (I use a micro controller with this board to trigger it) it will play the pre-recorded noise/sound/message on the pin you set up.

**Q: Can I use it with mac OS?**
A: Yes. I had no issues with the Mac OS

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ ... this component on a whim but am now in love with it
*by J***. on July 29, 2015*

I bought this component on a whim but am now in love with it. Several thoughts: 1) This is the sort of item that strikes me as a perfect "first experiment" for those eager to get into DIY electronics but for whatever reason are slightly intimidated with the programming that goes along with a micro-controller like Arduino. It requires a little soldering (own a solder iron) and a breadboard is a definite must, plus a few wires. But other than that, it is a stand-alone product. You can have fun with it without ever getting into Arduino. 2) Sound quality is great considering the price and the USB interface to drop in sound files couldn't be simpler. 3) Finally, and this is important, keep in mind going into it that the trigger pins are actually "outputs" and not inputs.... the Vin and Gnd leads on the opposite, upper corner of the board need to be connected to between 3-5v, but after that, all that is required to trigger each sound file is to provide a wire connection it to the bottom GND pin below the trigger pins... I spent way to long trying to activate the sound files by APPLYING voltage to these pins as opposed to simply grounding them.... its a testament to Adafruit engineering I didn't damage the thing. In any case, highly recommended.
