This electrode was primarily designed to provide good wetting and shallow penetration for thin sheet metal applications (using smaller diameter electrodes), but with sufficient penetration for welding medium gauge steel. As a result, 6013 is an all purpose electrode that provides a soft steady arc which is easily regenerated, easy slag control for vertical-down welding, low spatter and a beautiful bead appearance. E6013 electrodes may be used in any position with AC or DC (straight or reverse polarity). Review: Good 6013 rods! - What we have here by first strike is some solid performing 6013. Characteristics are the usual for 6013. Less aggressive arc, easy starts and restarts, fairly moderate penetration. I ran these in the area of 95-110amps DCEP on a AHP AlphaTIG 200x. Very consistent from my experience and I know they could run a lower amperage if needed on thin material. As far as bead on plate appearance, well these do make you work to keep the toes tied in and keep the worm beds out of the weld (all about working on that fusion with 6013)... but that is consistent with my experiences with Hobart small package 6013 as well. I would conclude, having only run these on DCEP mind you, that these rods would work for light duty fabrication and are well suited for the home-game welder that would appreciate saving a couple bucks on rods while not sacrificing weldability. They do work, and as long as you tune them in for the right amount of heat + you work to tie in the edges as I mentioned above, they will work very well.
