I got cold feet, and before turning the plumber loose I decided to try to open up the old valve. I removed the tub spout and shower head, plugged the tub outlet with a rubber stopper, and filled the shower line, valve body and cartride with white vinegar using a vinyl tube and funnel. I let this sit for about 5 days, removed the stopper, and now the valve body works like new. This was a LOT cheaper and easier than the plumbing and remodeling jobs I was looking at. I used ordinary white vinegar, the kind with nutrition information that you can use to make salad dressing.
