Worked well, more than what I needed for personal use

I bought this with the intention of making chalk paint and experimenting a bit. I think the product is good however I found it hard to mix out the lumps to get an even texture but I found that if you take a little bit of paint, mix it with the chalk paint additive in a little container, and keep mixing until it's smooth, it's much easier to add back to a larger amount of paint. I didn't need too much of the additive as I was only experimenting with stenciling, etc but the amount that comes in the bag is enough to mix, I believe, a gallon of paint.I've also tried making my own paint additive with adding plaster of Paris to paint and it has more or less the same effect except that the plaster of Paris ends up leaving little white specks in the paint (visible in darker colors). That being said, I am curious to know what's in this product as it seemed to work and it's a heck of a lot cheaper than buying chalk paint. I recommend to anyone looking for a quality paint additive.

Need an alternative to that expensive chalk paint?

I have used Annie Sloan chalk paints with previous projects, and each time my hubby complains about the hefty price per can. I suppose that makes sense - why would you spend $40 on a can of paint to refurbish a $2 chair from the Goodwill outlet? So, while searching for alternatives, I came across this additive. We decided to use it while furnishing my daughter's house, as she was doing it entirely from upcycled furniture found in yard sales and thrift stores. We bought the small sample sizes of paint from home depot ($2 for about 12 oz) and mixed in approx 2 T of powder per can. The powder is a bit difficult to mix in, so in some cases we added a bit of water. Though the mixture can appear lumpy, it goes on pretty smooth and covers everything well, even without sanding. stripping or priming. No more than two coats needed. Drying time is quick, comparable to Annie Sloan, and for finishes we used either minwax or stain and polyurethane. Positives to this vs Annie Sloan - 1) cheaper, 2) can mix smaller amounts of many different colors of paint. Negatives - goes on slightly less uniform than the AS paint, though that may have been due to our poor mixing skills. With one bag we've done 8 chairs, a large oak dining table, two end tables, one coffee table, three occasional tables....and have more than 2/3 of a bag left.

    Not bad but not great

I used this on some furniture and it worked but not any better than my own DIY recipe using plaster of paris or unsanded grout. I bought it hoping it would be smoother but it turned out the same and ended up costing me about the same as a whole box of plaster of paris or grout that I get a lot more than one gallon of paint out of.I would have liked better instructions on the packaging - like whether to use a mask when mixing (I did anyway) and is it toxic to me or my pets.It did the job but not any better than my own mix.
