It will only light up when there is noise. It remains on green when the volume is acceptable. Goes to yellow to give the class a warning for a few seconds, then it goes to red and the siren go off when the volume is too loud. However, everyone has their own interpretation on what is "too loud." That is why I love the Yacker Tracker. You can adjust the switch to what volume it is that YOU want the siren to go off to. I know I had to adjust it a little because it would go off if someone sneezed or sharpened a pencil...It's easy to adjust (only a switch on the side of it) and it worked great in my Kindergarten class. It was fine for the students sitting near the YT, but did not pick up on students just a few seats away. Turning up the sensitivity made it too sensitive and the next row was still out of range. We also tested it in an oral language classroom and could see the impact right away when students were left for pair work. The lights were great then!
