Review: 英語を教えている小学校5年の孫の希望で求めましたが、まだstep2をマスターした程度なので、単語が難しすぎました。しばらく段階を踏んでずっと先にtextに使おうと思っています。このStep into Readingのシリーズは、今回初めて使っていますが、単語や文のchoiceが非常に優れていて、内容も的確で分かりやすく書いてあり、イラストも生き生きと正確で面白く、1ページの文の量も適量、しかもページ毎の文章量に変化があるので、飽きさせず、無理させず、誘導することができます。また本は薄く、ページ数も少ないので、1冊終えるのにあまり時間がかからないから、生徒にこんなにたくさんの本を読み終えたという達成感を与えることもできます。孫は理科系のものに興味を示すので、その分野でしばらくstep通りに使っていこうと思っています。このシリーズのstep分けの特徴が本の裏表紙に書いてありました。1が読書の準備段階、pre-schoolと幼稚園とありますが、それは英語圏の対象なので、日本の場合は度外視していいかと思います。2は基本の語彙、短文、簡単なstories. 3は一人で読む、4はparagraphで読む、5は章ごとに読むための準備、とあります。4,5はすごいですね。対象は2,3年生と2-4年生です。こんなに速い段階からparagraphingを教えるのですね。paragraphで、内容を分析総合する力の訓練をこんな初期に始めるとは驚きました。日本には漢字というもう一つの高度な課題がありますが、内容把握と分析の力を早くから養うことは必要ですね。 Review: My grandson is a science fan and I buy him books all the time. Even though he’s in second grade, he reads at a fourth grade level. I am a retired teacher and I look for books that are interesting, have pictures and sometimes I want them to be a reference for later on since he reads so fast. He told me he really liked this book and stated some facts from the book. We followed up with making a little volcano with baking soda and vinegar. The book is small so he can put it on his bookshelf in his room.
