It can but it is not the best. It creates a thin arc that goes out easily with thicker fuel, if you get my drift. For example, it will easily light paper, candles, and incense sticks. Not so good for lighting a braid of Sweet Grass, a Sage smudge stick, or a brick of Pinon. Hope this helps. **Q: How quickly does it light? And would it light a birthday cake with a lot of candles quickly?** A: Lights in a couple secs but you would have to light each candle separately since the plasma arc is so small. More of a safer way to light candles than a standard lighter. But a standard flame lighter would probably light a bunch of candles held together faster. **Q: Can I start a wood stove fire with this?** A: Absolutely!! I take mine camping and have used it to start wood fires, propane and charcoal grills. I don't know if my wife received a defective one or if they are all the same but it works 15-20 lights and then it's dead, sometimes less than that, the battery meter shows 4 full bars of charge and then after you press the button and get 1 more light out of it, it blinks saying it's totally dead. Shelf life of the battery is terrible, she charged it, left it on her end table for a few days, used it 3-4x and it was dead.
