It must be broken up a bit while potting at first, but it seems to retain moisture fairly well. The 2 pack was probably about quadruple what I actually needed for potting a christmas cactus in a 6.9 inch pot, but I thought I was going to be upgrading several plants. Miracle grow is typically good quality and this seems the same and had no major smells other than soil.
