My wife has the L2's. I shoot skeet and trap with my L3's using a 12 ga. I also shoot many other guns using them. They are comfortable, and block the sound, and shock waves excellent. I swear by them. They have a NRR (noise reduction rating) of 30 which is very high. On occasion if I have had sinus trouble, I will use collapsible foam ear inserts plus the Howard Leight L3's. You cant hear people talking then. I really dont think you'll be disappointed with the L3's. **Q: Are they big enough to fit an extra large head well?** A: An extra large head is vague, I mean how large is xtra large. My hat size is 7 5/8. When I wear these, they are almost down on the lowest setting. So I would think they would fit you. **Q: Would these be comfortable for someone with a bigger sized head?** A: My work bought these for everyone. I wear a size 7 1/4 hat, yet the bottom of the cup squeezes in against te bottom of my ears and that is fully extended. Bigger head? Don't buy them. **Q: Which Howard Leight earmuff is best for outdoor shooting that does not need batteries or have to use ear plugs with them?** A: Cynthia, the Howard Leight R-03318 are great, not needing batteries and not needing ear plugs.
