I have mine sitting on my desk at approx arms length away, I talk at regular volume, and people hear me just fine. I would imagine if he needs to, he could move it closer to him. I had a webcam that I thought was only a camera.. it turns out it had a microphone in it as well which was interfering with any other microphone I would attach. People could barely hear me.
