## Questions & Answers

**Q: Can i braze mild steel to mild steel as i can't bronze braze because i need silver color for art use ? it's for brazing stems to leaves.**
A: Mild steel to mild steel is no problem, but It isn't a perfectly clean silver color. If you have a small grinder like a Dremel you can smooth the weld to make it more silvery.

**Q: would these rods work for soldering steel sights onto a steel gun barrel?**
A: I used it to solder a fixed choke to a shotgun barrel. It worked for me, but the temperature must reach 1600, or cherry red. That kind of temp will naturalize the temper in your barrel. However, if the area in question is at the end of the barrel no foul, but if its mid-barrel you may want to re-consider. db♫♪

**Q: Can this rod braze stainless steel to stainless steel?**
A: Yes, with the proper flux.
don't use the blue flux on the rods, it doesn't work well.
purchase some Harris Stay silv black flux and a flux brush.
harris black flux has a working range between 1050°F and 1800°F.
stainless steel will carbonize very quickly if you're not careful.
brush a thin coat of harris flux paste on the stainless
then heat both pieces at the same time then push the rod against the base metal when it reaches an amber color, you may need to also heat the rod a little if it doesn't flow.
If your stainless parts are 20 gauge or thinner focus more heat on the rod as the rod will take longer to heat, the surface of your stainless steel will carbonize if you heat it too long.

**Q: Are these food grade. Lead and Cadmium free? Will they work for a whiskey still**
A: From my reading of the the manufatcurer’s MSDS; Worthington Imdustries does not make any food contact safety claim or describe or guarantee trace concentrations of unwanted metals that might be relevant to your desired use. These brazing rods are a copper (46%) zinc (45) nickel (7) manganese (1.5) iron (1) silicon (<0.5%) alloy. The flux coating is described as a boric acid/borax glass and methacrylate/aliphatic & naptyenic coating. The borax compounds are the flux, the organic carbon bearing molecules would be the binder, and the blue color would be unexplained.
If you want to use something food safe Harris Products makes “Safety-Silv 56” a high silver content brazing alloy rods for use in the food processing industry. You can use either flux coated rods, or metal, wire with brush on flux. Neither choice is as inexpensive as these rods, but an alcohol still is likely to leach any contaminants into your productions.
